YAM in Waterville
By Serena Sanborn (she/her)
Waterville Creates partnered with Colby College Arts Office again this year to celebrate Youth Art Month with a colorful, multi-site exhibition showcasing artworks by local students in grades K–12. The exhibition featured a wide range of media including painting, digital art, pottery, photography, and more, with submissions from art teachers representing 34 schools across the region!
The opening reception on March 13th drew a crowd of more than 800 attendees. Guests enjoyed snacks, a fun photo backdrop, and performances by student musicians, creating a joyful, celebratory atmosphere. It is a favorite event for our staff to see students dressed up for the occasion and to welcome families spanning multiple generations — grandparents, siblings, and caregivers — all gathering to celebrate these young artists. (Every time I see a full suit and tie or fancy dress on an elementary student with their family in attendance, I get misty eyed. It is SO AWESOME.) Each participant received a tote bag and “Distinguished Artist” sticker, and many also stopped by our local florist, The Robin’s Nest, to pick up a free flower!
A special thank you goes to exhibition coordinator Marie Sugden, whose incredible organizational skill and care made it possible to showcase so many works so beautifully — she truly is a wonder!
For many Waterville Creates staff, this event is a favorite each year, offering the chance to witness families come together to celebrate their young person’s artwork displayed in a gallery setting. We are honored to host this each year and see our community celebrate young artists and art teachers! (This celebration of creativity and community was made possible thanks to the generous support of Harold Alfond Foundation, Kennebec Savings Bank, the City of Waterville, and the Colby Center for the Arts and Humanities.)
